There are as many ways to cut a diamond as can be imagined: The sky's the limit when it comes to blending mathematics and diamonds' natural properties to create a piece of mineral artwork. However, in practical terms, diamantaires will usually stick to a set of common shapes that are ideal expressions of the stone's unique traits. Round cuts, princess cuts, and cushion cuts are the most common—and you're almost certain to have seen those shapes before.

But there are a few diamond shapes that, while they're still part of the list of shapes that can be found by average people, are nonetheless unusual. Asscher Cut

In 1902, the Asscher cut was designed by famed diamantaire Joseph Asscher. Designed before the innovation of the brilliant round, vintage diamonds in this camp were cut like step pyramids, their rear facets giving the stone a "hall of mirrors" effect of black and white bars. Paired with its clipped corners and "windmill" pattern at its heart, this shape is a truly unusual piece in the modern world. If you're looking for an alternative to a princess-cut engagement ring, you may prefer the Asscher cut for its vintage charm and square elegance.

Marquise Cut

Originally designed to mimic the famous lips of King Louis XV's courtesan, Madame de Pompadour, the marquise cut is a diamond shaped like a long canoe, its rounded sides coming to two points. Because of their unique ability to act as an accent, marquise cuts have historically been relegated to side stones. But in recent times, designers have reimagined the shape for use as centre stones. The shape is unlike any other diamond cut, and if you've selected a setting that can protect its delicate points, its striking shape and luminous facets make for a truly contemporary engagement ring option.

Emerald Cut

As with the Asscher cut, the emerald cut is a vintage "step" diamond. Unlike the Asscher, however, the emerald cut is significantly longer, presenting a broad, water-clear table which shows off the potential flawlessness of the stone. Its steps aren't arranged in a "windmill" shape, but the parallel bars of black and white provide a unique alternative to the fire and scintillation of a brilliant-cut stone, making it a great contrast with a wedding band studded with round brilliants. As a long shape, the emerald cut is also a good choice for the woman who wants to make her hand appear narrower.

Heart Cut

As the name implies, this diamond shape is an heart. A heart-cut diamond is often a very divisive choice, with some women finding it too twee for their tastes.
